Most definitely, its a basic form of marketing. Its to peak curiousity.
I see alot of females doing this who are otherwise not so attractive. Put up a good angle of them (usually provactive). Make their profile private. Man sees this “preview” and wants to see what else she may be showing. Usually in disappointment. It definitely increases their popularity and gets them more sucke…..I mean “friends”
Some of the dating sites use fake bait profiles to spur interest.
If that man or woman reads like the perfect match and then you can not get any more info on them unless you pay money or sign up for an extended time– then you can tell it is a bait profile just to get you hooked.
One of those nasty little business tricks — remember the dating sites are trying to make money—their priority is their bank account not your social life. And yes, even on the “free” sites—because they sell advertising!
Some people do that on purpose… some people just simply wants privacy
well not exactly. they don’t manipulate the system, but people do generally keep false information about them, just to impress the other party. That is why the best defence is self defence. Never ever go for an anon reply. also, if you think that you like a particular person, arrange a meet up. if the opposite person is genuine, he/she will def come…. and you can know the person by having a personal meet.

I don’t see how hiding their profile will make them look popular.
I think that it’s very possible, as well as rather likely. Maybe they just want to get off at looking at other people and stuff, or they could be creepy and want to kill people
Some sites require you to join before you can search. This makes people create a profile just to look around. If they don’t see any interesting ads, they hide their profile…. No point in letting people their not interested in write them.
People may also join sites just to see if spouses, or SOs have ads posted.
I can’t imagine how having a profile no one can see could make a person seem popular.
I’m sure some of that goes on, but if one is serious about meeting others, they must know they have to be honest and open, because they’ll be found out eventually if the relationship progresses. It’s kinda’ embarrassing to have to “fess up” to untruths once you are into a friendship.
